A 16-Point Manifesto on Why You Should Stop Being A Dick About Music

  1. Everyone likes music in their own way, for their own reasons.
  2. Your reasons for liking what you like don’t make you better or worse than anyone else, just different.
  3. Good taste is not absolute.
  4. Being thoughtful about music is more important than being right about your opinions about music.
  5. Just because nobody else likes something, that doesn’t mean it’s bad.
  6. Just because nobody else likes something, that doesn’t mean it’s good.
  7. Taking comfort in obscurity is no different than taking comfort in popularity.
  8. Rules were made to be broken.
  9. Breaking rules is easier than following them inventively.
  10. Works that are outside the canon offer excitement and danger and the thrill of discovery.
  11. So do works that are in the canon.
  12. Received knowledge is uninspiring.
  13. Permanent contrarianism is exhausting.
  14. Curiosity is much more attractive than disdain.
  15. Moving forward is good.
  16. Moving forward honestly is better.
